Frankenweenie Trailer Arrives Online

Burton's back in black and whiteSo here it is, the first full trailer for Tim Burton's dead-then-alive-again pet project, Frankenweenie.A stop-motion remake of Burton's 1984 short film, it's just as, well, Burtonesque as you'd expect, all Corpse Bride jawlines and monochrome chiaroscuro.Vocal talents come from a number of different sources, including a couple of Burton old hands (hello Winona Ryder), as they tell the tale of young resurrection fan and hobbying scientist Victor Frankenstein (Charlie Tahan) bringing his dead dog back to life. The animation looks pretty damn good, and it's very encouraging to see just how much this most anticipated of Frankenstein pastiches revels in the sheer darkness of it all.Anyway, take a look at the trailer yourself and let us know what you think. Will you be watching this, "From the director of Alice In Wonderland", when it comes out on Ocotber 5?Let us know in the comment box below.

CA Tax credit program 'limited,' study finds

A UCLA study has mentioned that California's four-year-old Film and television Tax Credit Program needs to be extended once the condition is always to maintain its position just like a production center -- instead of seeing shooting flee elsewhere."The uncertainty created with the limited size California's tax credit program, which has the ability to provide credits by lottery to merely one inch every five candidates, causes many film and tv producers to pursue credits off their states," the study authors mentioned.Showbiz producers and unions are actually strong supporters in the program, which has doled out $400 million in tax credits so far. The program was extended for just about any single year in October when Gov. Jerry Brown signed Setup Bill 1069 round the final day for your governor to approve or veto bills from last year's legislative session.Variety reported on Jan. 26 that Assemblyman Felipe Fuentes had pledged presenting legislation which will extend California's film production incentive program -- probably for five years -- using the goal of telegraphing stability for the industry. The Golden State's program is substantially smaller sized rather than as sweet as much others, getting a maximum 25% credit with any production over $75 million excluded. The completely new study, titled "There's Room Like Home," was completed by UCLA's Institute for Research on Labor and Employment incorporated within the Headway Project.Study learned that the tax credit program is benefitting the problem economically by getting an imapct of $1.04 for every dollar spent. Research launched last summer season with the La County Economic Development Corp. and funded with the Movie Assn. of America thought that figure at $1.13 for for every $1 the problem allocated, using the assumption that any production seeking a tax credit would depart California whether it didn't receive one.The UCLA report learned that 8.4% in the credits presented to 14 productions that have been produced despite situated about this years-11 wait list visited films and tv suggests that may have shot in California anyhow. The study also recommended the California program be modified inside the following ways:-- The annual allocation needs to be elevated from $100 million to $200 million. "California's program is uncompetitive with locations for instance NY, Louisiana and Canada that offer $400 million to $500 million every year in subsidies, haven't any caps and supply much greater rates," the authors mentioned.-- films and tv shows with budgets a lot more than $75 million needs to be allowed to register getting a 12% credit. "Fundamental necessities greatest and several beneficial projects, frequently trading $100 million to $200 million and employing thousands of employees per project," the authors mentioned. "Today, almost all of individuals 'tentpole' productions leave California for states that, like Louisiana, haven't any cap by themselves subsidies."-- allow credits being transferrable within the entertainment industry. "Jetski from the tax credits entirely within the intended industry and removes the incentive for filmmakers just to walk out condition looking for a cash option that California doesn't offer," the report mentioned.-- supply the California Film Commissioner energy to deny or withdraw a credit once the project shows California becoming an unattractive location. "Such recommendations aren't uncommon in other states," the authors mentioned.-- commission a completely new bipartisan study, comprised of legislators who both support and oppose the program. The authors mentioned this kind of study would take six several days and cost $250,000 -- a "pittance" as compared to the present annual $100 million tax credit allocation."California cannot simply provide its arms and enable an important industry to go away the problem completely," in conclusion mentioned, watching that 40 other states and many offer incentives. 'John Carter' Featurette Loaded With New Footage

"John Carter" gets a brand new featurette filled to the brim with plenty of new footage for fans to pore over. Meanwhile, Marty McFly could dance his way to Broadway, Jean Dujardin got in some trouble for racy French ads and "Avatar 2" might be filming down under. It's February 2, and you're here for today's daily news round-up. New "John Carter" Featurette A new featurette has premiered for "John Carter." The video is loaded with plenty of new footage, including some rare chances to hear the characters speak (the previous trailers have placed the emphasis on special effects). It's nice to see Taylor Kitsch get brought down a notch by the badass princess being played by Lynn Collins! Could "Back To The Future" Get A Broadway Show? It will if Robert Zemeckis has anything to say about it. Deadline is reporting that he is in talks with co-writer Bob Gale and original composer Alan Silvestri to see if they can find a way to transfer the beloved tale to the Broadway stage. We are obsessing over the idea of being able to see Marty McFly close out the show with a live performance of "Johnny B. Goode." France Says Jean Dujardin Is Inappropriate In New Ads Apparently the ad campaign for the Jean Dujardin-starring French flick "The Players" is a bit too raunchy. The Hollywood Reporter details the situation and explains how the ARPP, France's authority for the professional regulation of advertising, has decided that the posters for the flick violate their rules. It's funny -- those ads would probably fly over here! Matt Damon And John Krasinski's Movie Finally Has A Title The movie that was supposed to be Matt Damon's directorial debut (Gus Van Sant is helming it instead) has finally got a title! According to a Deadline story, the flick is now called "Promised Land." And it's officially an indie, as Focus Features and Participant Media just purchased it. "Avatar" Sequels To Film In New Zealand? James Cameron and Peter Jackson are soon going to be neighbors. The "Avatar" director just purchased about 2,470 acres of farmland near the New Zealand capital of Wellington, according to Reuters. Although it is reported that he and his family will be moving to New Zealand to "reside indefinitely," this news fuels rumors that he will be shooting his upcoming "Avatar" sequels in that country. The Hangover 3 Is Creeping Closer

Warners wants it shooting this summerThe Hangover 2 may not have been the best comedy last year. Actually, it probably didn't number among the 30 best comedies of 2011. But it did make a lot of people laugh, and stormed the box office, which in turn made Warner Bros. a lot of money. And though we've known this was on the way for a while now (mostly because director Todd Phillips said as much when he was out promoting the second film, the details are finally coming together for a shooting schedule and planned release. And from the sounds of the Hollywood Reporter's story on the matter, three other people are going to become both very happy and financially successful once they lock their deals in. Yes, stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis are currently deep in negotiations to return and since they're the lynchpins of the franchise, they're looking to score around $15 million each for their services. Most of the money, as on the second film, will hit their bank accounts once the movie goes into profit, but given that the first Hangover made $467 million worldwide and the second $581 million, there's little danger of that not happening. We're sure the studio will be happy to cough up the cash if it means a solid commitment to another entry. The current schedule is for the new outing to start shooting this summer ready for a late May 2013 release. And what of the plot? Writer Craig Mazin is hard at work thrashing that out now, and he's hopefully not just cutting and pasting the gags from the first two scripts into a new location. Phillips is on record as saying that he wants to change things up and the actors have also been putting that line across. We'll wait and see...

In tonight's Condition from the Union address, Leader Obama introduced the development of a "trade enforcement unit" that'll be assigned with looking into "unfair trade practices" in other nations, including China.Saying "it isn't right when another country allows our movies, music and software be unlicensed," Obama told some pot session of Congress the unit is going to be assigned with assessments "to avoid counterfeit or unsafe goods from crossing our edges."Obama's mention of problem of piracy is another jerk to Hollywood.A week ago, studio professionals were freely critical from the administration after it belittled lengthy-in-the-works anti-piracy legislation pending in Congress. The debts delayed out a week ago when confronted with common protest online, with activists charging the legislation was an overreach. It had been unclear the extent that the trade enforcement unit would target piracy --- or the way it will vary from existing initiatives released by customs authorities. Bizzers gather to remember Bingham Ray

As bizzers gathered Monday at the Sundance Film Festival to honor Bingham Ray, none could easily come to terms with the fact that the indie world had lost a fierce protector of independent filmmakers.Just a few hours after word spread that Ray had died from a stroke, industryites gathered in the cozy, dark wood-paneled High West Distillery on Main Street to raise a glass to his memory."Bingham was the heart and soul of the whole independent movement of which all of us were a part," said FilmDistrict's Jeannie Berney. Several hundred attendees dried their eyes, sipped on house whiskey and wine and began to come to terms with Ray's death."He was my role model. I would see him at film festivals, at Cannes. We would hang out," said filmmaker Ron Mann, struggling for a moment with emotion.John Schmidt, a 20-year business partner who was with Ray's family in the days after he fell ill, was unable to attend the impromptu gathering, but spoke to Variety about his friend."He had a profound impact, both in the sense of accomplishing things through business means, but also through what he stood for," Schmidt said. "He loved film, he knew it in encyclopedically, and he reflected that in how he did his work."Bizzers told many stories, reflecting his passion, humor and pugnacity: Acting as a Neal Cassady-esque figure with a 45-minute monologue on the company bus to a Neil Young concert during "Year of the Horse"; diving across the October Films conference table to land a perfect face-plant in his birthday cake; climbing over theater seats in Cannes to mix it up with Harvey Weinstein and calling him "a fat fuck" in a very loud voice; sitting through a 10-hour screening of Lars von Trier's "The Kingdom" and buying it on the spot; and immortalizing certain colleagues with his impromptu song lyrics. But the most common thread was how he fought tirelessly for the movies he loved so much."The thing about Bingham was that he was a ferocious protector of independent films," Berney said. "He would go to great lengths to bring a movie to the marketplace.""I think his memory is going to live on for a very very long time," said Danny Rosett, now a consultant, who worked with Ray when he ran United Artists. "He was as much an icon of this festival as anybody was. It's some source of comfort that all of us could be together at a time like this, at the festival, in hope that we can carry on in his tradition." Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Fashion Star: It's Not Just About the Fashion It's Also About the Shopping!

Nicole Richie, John Varvatos, Elle Macpherson, Jessica Simpson At first glance, NBC's upcoming Fashion Star may sound like a knockoff of Lifetime's Project Runway and Bravo's The Fashion Show. But executive producers, including original Runway co-creator Jane Lipsitz, insist Fashion Star goes one step further. As host and executive producer Elle Macpherson told reporters at NBC's winter TV preview Friday, it was important to "create a show that was just as much about shopping as it was about fashion." Premiering Tuesday, March 13 at 10/9c, Fashion Star's aspiring designers are judged not by fashion magazine editors or designers, but by buyers for Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy's and H&M. The buyers place competing bids on fashions they like and, also unlike Runway and Fashion Show, viewers will then be able to buy the clothes online immediately after the episode airs and the next day in stores. "You're voting with your pocketbook and you can wear the winner," executive producer (and former NBC Entertainment Chairman) Ben Silverman said. "This show lives and breathes because H&M, Macy's and Saks are in it. They make it that much better."
